Finding God in the Midst of Pain
“There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” Revelation 21:4b
Reading this verse should give us comfort, but it's also a stark reminder that our current reality is far from ideal. Our world is plagued by death, grief, tears, and fears. It doesn't take long before we learn of another tragedy somewhere in the world, and we can't help but feel the profound impact of such brokenness, loss, and illness on our own loved ones.
The question of why we endure suffering is one that weighs heavily on all of us. Regardless of the reasons behind it, we must recognize that suffering is an undeniable aspect of our lives. As believers, we face an even greater problem when we ask ourselves the following question: Where is God in the midst of my pain and suffering?
Discovering God in the midst of suffering
The Bible is full of stories about God's people suffering pain and hardship. In the Book of Psalms alone, there are 42 psalms that give expression to lament. In the midst of trials, however, Scripture reminds us again and again that God remains by our side even in our darkest moments.
Psalm 34:18 assures us: "The Lord is close to those who are brokenhearted and helps those who are crushed in spirit." Furthermore, Jesus himself experienced unimaginable suffering for us, assuring us that we are never alone. As believers, we can find comfort in knowing that God is with us and gives us comfort in times of suffering.
Discovering community in the midst of suffering
Just as God walks with us through our pain, He often sends others to give us comfort and strength. It's natural to want to hide our struggles from those around us. However, when we open up and share our suffering with others, we discover a deep sense of joy in the Christian community.
Our own painful experiences can also serve as an opportunity to help others who are suffering. Scripture reminds us that we can comfort those in trouble by drawing on the comfort we ourselves receive from God (2 Corinthians 1:4b).
Discovering hope in the midst of suffering
In Romans 8:18, the apostle Paul writes: "I do not consider our present sufferings worthy to be compared with the glory that will be revealed." He beautifully articulates the truth that as Christians we can find reason to rejoice even in the midst of pain. We know that a greater joy awaits us and that our suffering does not have the last word.
Believers can look forward to a future where there will be no more death, mourning, weeping or pain. We persevere because we trust in God's promise that he will see us through until that glorious day arrives.
